Humphreys Yacht Design, together with SkySails, will be exhibiting the concept for a high-performance hybrid superyacht at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show. Powered by SkySails, this 40-meter trimaran can reach speeds of up to 18 knots without the help of its main engine, and up to 30 knots with the main engine. Naturally the two power sources can be used in combination to conserve fuel. With SkySails a shaft-driven generator can be activated, which charges batteries that can supply the main diesel-electric propulsion as needed. This way, with suitable wind conditions, the hybrid yacht can be powered without having to depend on oil. Yacht owners can now sail in a way that is ecologically responsible, without having to sacrifice the comfort they’ve come to enjoy. And, this type of propulsion provides owners a high degree of security and independence in times of crisis.
The yacht design and the SkySails technology will be showcased at the stand of Humphreys Yacht Design.
The Monaco Yacht Show 2008 is taking place from the 24th till the 27th of September in Monaco’s yacht harbour. Not only numerous superyachts and tender boats, but also superyacht equipment and new yacht designs will be showcased. With over 500 exhibitors and approx. 23,000 visitors, the Monaco Yacht Show is the leading trade fair of the international superyacht sector.

The French dock yard, 30 Metres Plus Yachts, has signed the first sales contract for a SkySails superyacht system. Owner and manager Michael Haeley explains passionately: “The SkySails-System is highly innovative and revolutionises yacht construction. Using the SkySails technology it will be possible to combine the positive characteristics of both a sailing and a motor yacht. Yachts with an adjusted design for the SkySails-System can enjoy the comfortable see state characteristics of a sailing yacht and the space capacities of a motor yacht at the same time.” The Valbella will be able to soundlessly cross the sea using the SkySails-System without support from the main engine. The dock yard in France plans to specialise in the construction of SkySails motor hybrid yachts after completing and testing the Valbella.
