Within the framework of WINTECC (Demonstration of an innovative wind propulsion technology for cargo vessels), a LIFE-project funded by the European Union, the savings potential of the SkySails technology shall be determined over the next five years. Besides the Bremen-based Beluga Fleet Management GmbH & Co.KG and the manufacturer SkySails from Hamburg, the companies OceanWaveS (Lüneburg) and ALDEBARAN (Hamburg) are also involved in this project that will cost over 4 million euros in total - with 1.2 million being funded by the EU. The SkySails-System will not only be employed on cargo ships, but also on fish trawlers and superyachts in the future.
For more information see: www.wintecc.de, www.beluga-group.com, www.skysails.de, www.oceanwaves.de and www.aldebaran.org SkySails is funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF; Federal Ministry of Education and Research) within the framework of the joined project „Klimaschutz: Windkraftantrieb für Frachtschiffe“ (climate protection: wind propulsion system for cargo vessels) in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Oldenburg/ Ostfriesland/Wilhelmshaven, the Institut für Angewandte Wirtschaftsforschung and the Institut Seefahrt Leer. The main objective of this joined research project is the development and testing of a ship propulsion system that reduces the climate-damaging emissions of conventional ship operation to a minimum. The SkySails towing kite technology provides the basis for this project. Since 2005, the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology) is funding SkySails GmbH & Co. KG within the framework of the PROgram „Förderung der Erhöhung der INNOvationskompetenz mittelständischer Unternehmen“ (PRO INNO II) promoted by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen "Otto von Guericke" e.V. (AiF). Additionally, SkySails has been supported with funds from the Innovationsstiftung of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg and with funds from the Wirtschaftsbehörde of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg in 2003 and 2004. In 2001 SkySails was funded by "hep", the Hamburg business start-up program, and also the first company to be funded by the IdeenFONDS of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
