In cooperation with the meteorological services company WetterWelt GmbH, SkySails has used statistical weather data to measure the global wind energy potential for SkySails propulsion and render it in map form. Different shades of color show the various levels of wind energy. The dark areas represent those regions with the greatest amount of wind energy. As you can see, the map clearly shows a high degree of wind energy on many primary shipping routes – the very routes where using the SkySails-System will prove to be extremely beneficial.
These findings are not surprising when you consider that most port cities originated at times when wind-propelled sailing ships carried all of the world’s trade. As a result, most ports were established at locations that were easily accessible by these sailing ships.
