"Sustainable Shipping" is the predominant topic in the industry’s metropolis London at the moment: Coinciding with the 59th session of the IMO Marine Environmental Protection Committee, the inaugural "Sustainable Shipping Awards" were presented on July 15th. The Awards – launched by the industry platform SustainableShipping.com and supported by BIMCO, Lloyd’s Register and the WWF – are a symbol of and honor for companies and individuals who make a vital, active contribution to improve the environmental legacy of the shipping industry and to pave its way for a sustainable future.
The high-profile jury panel of industry experts and insiders was impressed with the huge number and high quality of the nominations submitted and had the difficult task of choosing the industry’s outstanding innovators and pioneers in six categories.
The SkySails wind propulsion system convinced the jury by its combination of highly innovative thinking and practicable design for reaping the best environmental benefits possible and was awarded as "Environmental Technology of the Year".
The presentation of and great response to the Sustainable Shipping Awards underlines once again that “Green Shipping” is one of the main challenges and trends in the maritime industry today and that SkySails is perceived industry-wide as sustainable solution for the future.
