By using the SkySails technology large quantities of fuel can be saved. Consequently, ship operating costs drop significantly.
Economical acquisition and operating costs for the SkySails-System lead to short amortization periods of between 3 and 5 years.
The ship's regular crew is adequate for operating the system and no additional personnel costs will arise.
SkySails has conducted numerous studies on the savings potential of SkySails-Systems based on data from practical trials on cargo vessels, logbook extracts, and historical weather data. Actual ocean voyages were also recomputed. The result of these computations is a savings potential of between 10% and 35% depending on the ship.
A savings calculation for three model ships traveling on four different routes is shown in the following tables.
Ship owners will benefit from an investment in SkySails propulsion even when not performing the role as charterer. In these cases, shipping companies can demand higher charter rates for vessels outfitted with the SkySails-System, since the contracting partners can expect to incur lesser operating costs.
As an alternative, ship owners also have the option of invoicing the charter companies for all or part of the fuel-cost savings. Data on these savings is automatically tracked on board and can be accessed via SkySails at any time.
