SkySails makes the previously unimaginable combination of two worlds possible for the first time: super yachts with the entirely new SkySails towing kite propulsion effortlessly unite the advantages of motor yachts and sailing ships. Motor yachts provide spaciousness and speed while sailing yachts offer emission- and vibration-free enjoyment. Cruising at sea is significantly more comfortable on a sailing yacht, but this is achieved with a disturbing inclined position.
The automated SkySails-System combines the advantages of both worlds effortlessly: On a yacht fitted with a SkySails you can glide soundlessly with motor yacht comfort.
Humphreys Yacht Design, together with SkySails, will be exhibiting the concept for a high-performance hybrid super yacht at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show. Powered by SkySails, this 40-meter trimaran can reach speeds of up to 18 knots without the help of its main engine, and up to 30 knots with the main engine. Naturally the two power sources can be used in combination to conserve fuel. With SkySails a shaft-driven generator can be activated, which charges batteries that can supply the main diesel-electric propulsion as needed. This way, with suitable wind conditions, the hybrid yacht can be powered without having to depend on oil. Yacht owners can now sail in a way that is ecologically responsible, without having to sacrifice the comfort they’ve come to enjoy. And, this type of propulsion provides owners a high degree of security and independence in times of crisis.
The yacht design and the SkySails technology will be showcased at the stand of Humphreys Yacht Design.
The Monaco Yacht Show 2008 is taking place from the 24th till the 27th of September in Monaco’s yacht harbour. Not only numerous super yachts and tender boats, but also super yacht equipment and new yacht designs will be showcased. With over 500 exhibitors and approx. 23,000 visitors, the Monaco Yacht Show is the leading trade fair of the international super yacht sector.
